Where are the non-religious? I took the all religions map and reverse coded it.

The map is based on 149 participating groups. Those groups don't include all religious people, especially not where very small splinter groups and independent congregations are common, so it's not clear if the gray areas are majority non-religious or perhaps just not accounted for. I suspect in the Appalachians, it's the unaccounted-for that are the majority. How do you classify an independent congregation of snake handlers?

We are here, and we are not taken in by any SNAKE OIL SALESMEN. We can think for ourselves and dont believe in fairytales.

I know there are plenty of non-religious people. But looking at the map, I noticed a couple of areas that we think of as strongholds of fundamentalist unorganized churches that would have been under the radar of the 149-faith survey on which this was based. You can't classify them as non-religious by process of elimination. They have to say they're not religious to get valid data.

I also personally know or have known a great number of people who have a sort of vague religious connection: not associated with any congregation, don't 'believe in organized religion,' rarely if ever attend church, but do claim a belief in God or gods. Do you classify them as religious or non religious? It depends on what you mean by the term.

And within those who aren't religious, there are further shades of distinction. Some are decided atheists, some are undecided but don't specifically believe in God, and some plain don't care.

Maybe even self-marginalized. The point I'm making is you can't arrive at a number for the unchurched by counting congregants.

Sure... It's more than obvious that any attempt at perfection is going to fail. But, the question is wheather or not it's of any help, to attempt to gain a general grasp of the largest percentages.
