Stem Cell Veto: Attacking science
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD
With President Bush casting his first veto in the pursuit of extremism, congressional leaders faced a stiff challenge. The House of Representatives failed, coming well short Wednesday of overriding his veto and advancing scientific research.
That may allow individual Republicans to claim they support embryonic stem cell research while allowing the party to reap rewards among right-wing extremists. But at least House and Senate majorities passed legislation that, as University of Washington President Mark Emmert said, would have advanced research 'in a responsible, ethical way.'
For now, America will fall behind other countries in research that promotes human lives. But if even a usually supine Congress challenged the president's know-no-science mentality, there's hope for a better outcome in the future.
