'Each time immigrants have these giant rallies, the more they infuriate the rest of the American population with the idea that those who break the law get to march and somehow be rewarded,' says Ira Mehlman, L.A. spokesman for Federation for American Immigration Reform.

The national anthem of Canada has two versions, respectively in English and French. As you may have seen in baseball or hockey games where the Canadian anthem is sung, it is customary to alternate between the two versions, singing one stanza in French and the other in English. As far as I know, very few Canadians object to that as they see bilingualism as an essential part of their national identity. Besides, both English and French are recognized as official languages under the Canadian federal constitution. The U.S of course is different from Canada in the sense that neither Spanish nor English enjoy official status at the federal level. Moreover, the Spanish-speaking population still represents only slightly over 10 % of the national U.S. population, whereas Francophones account for slightly under 25 % of the population of Canada. In any case, as the Spanish-speaking population continues to grow in the U.S. and an increasing number of states begin to grant Spanish official status, the natural trend is for the U.S. to go the Canadian way and become an officially bilingual country. At that point, having a bilingual national anthem will be a logical and reasonable choice. At present though, I believe the initiative is still premature.

This isn't a 'spanish version' it is a REWRITE of our Anthem. They have even taken out the 'star spangled banner' part! Why is that? Don't they like the American flag? And half the lyrics don't even make sense! I've heard it called the ILLEGAL ALIEN ANTHEM and it fits.
Yes, Americans DID rewrite British songs - to stick it in their eye! We rewrote songs like God Save the Queen as a rallying cry against the British. Not to make them like us! This is a shot across our bow. Not an 'homage'.

I see where many businesses, especially restaurants are closing May 1 in support of the illegal alien protesters.
I suggest we write or call all our favorite restaurants that close and advise them of our future Boycott and sanctions against them. We can refuse to go there, or if we do, forego tipping the hired help who partook in the marchers etc..
Restaurants especially survive on repeat business and referalls by ongoing patrons. Putting a dent in this patronage will impact their business and maybe make them see the light of LEGAL IMMIGRATION.
Waiting for the government to do anything is not adequate, we need to punish these businesses with our wallets.

You make the point that the Spanish speaking population is just slightly over 10%. But what if you were to include all non-English languages? In other words, what percentage of the population does not use English as their primary language?

Isn't the tune to the Star Spangled Banner actually an old English drinking song?
