Reuters admits using doctored photos

The thing that gets me is that people seem to have the attitude that if it has been photoshopped, then no damage was done at all and it can be safely ignored. But the original version is scarcely an image of the Garden of Eden.

Also, just about every image we have of other planets and the internal structure of the human body has been computer-enhanced. If we can dismiss all these, does that mean that we can have no understanding whatsoever of planets or the human body?

No, it looks like an exercise in damage limitation by people who don't want to admit that large parts of Lebanon are being literally destroyed by Israel.

So your theory is that Hajj exaggerated the damage done by the Israelis as a damage control measure?

My theory is that people making a fuss about it don't care about the content of the original photograph.

The fakery raises lots of questions. In the Qana affair there were serious allegations of staging and fakery by the Reuters stringer Hajj. Reuters dismissed these out of hand. A couple days later Hajj was nailed photoshopping photos for the wire.

The Palestinians have a long history of faking photos and situations, and it's quite likely that Hezbollah is following their lead. So you can't be sure that the photos and captions that accompany them are reflectint truth at all.

Your attitude seems to be 'sure, the photos are fake. But they bespeak a _larger_ truth!'

You think the original photo was faked? Perhaps the death figures were faked as well, and only one civilian was really killed by accident. All those eyewitnesses were in on it.

If you want to say the larger truth doesn't exist, I'm not going to try to convince you. But Israel also has a history of lies; perhaps their casualties don't really exist either.

You're naive if you think the photos from Lebanon are an accurate portrayal of reality. The press is relying on local stringers, and the local stringers are a) in the tank for Hezbollah, or b) intimindated by Hezbollah into presenting only Hezbollah-approved images. You'd dismiss out of hand any contrary suggestion if only DoD approved photos were released from Iraq.

And yes, it's likely that some of the photos from Lebanon do not reflect Israeli military actions at all. In the case of Hajj's photos, some people show up bewailing the loss of their homes weeks apart and in different areas of the country.

Then why make it look worse? What about another photograph submitted by the same photographer showing an Israeli jet firing three missiles when in fact it only fired one. Israel is destroying southern Lebanon and on the road to killing thousands of Lebanese. Why bother trying to make it look even worse?

And something else, the doctored photos *do* make things look worse. Do you think Muslim news networks have withdrawn their copies?
