Joe Lieberman may very well lose the Connecticut Democratic primary for senator next Tuesday. But he will win the general election in November.

A recent Quinnipiac poll found that Ned Lamont was leading Lieberman 54% to 41% of likely Democratic primary voters. That looks bad for Lieberman. But only in the primary. Lieberman gives all indications that he will run as independent if he has to in an effort to win his fourth term as senator.

And why not?

Only 30% of Connecticut voters are Dems. Lieberman has always gone beyond the Dems for support in his elections. In 1994, he won 67% to 31% and in 2000, he won 63% to 34%.

Clearly he draws some votes from the registered Repubs (20% of CT voters) and indies (50% of CT voters).

Another Quinnipiac pols suggests that Lieberman as an independent in a general election would trounce both Lamont and Schlesinger, the Repub candidate. The poll says Lieberman would get 51% of the vote to Lamont's 27% with Schlesinger getting only 9%

Joe Lieberman can't lose the election. All he has to do is run.
