Former President Jimmy Carter said in a Washington Post Op Ed article that there will be no peace in the Middle East as long as Israel refuses to honor pre-1967 borders and continues to occupy Arab lands.

'Palestinians see their remnant territories reduced to little more than

human dumping grounds surrounded by a provocative 'security barrier' that embarrasses Israel's friends and that fails to bring safety or stability,' he said in the article published on Aug. 1.

He also called on Israel to honor key U.N. resolutions, official American policy and to stop oppressing the Palestinians.

In a blow to the Bush Administration, Carter said progress in the Middle East is impeded by Washington's 'strange policy that dialogue on

controversial issues will be extended only as a reward for subservient behavior and will be withheld from those who reject U.S. assertions.'

This is preposterous. Israel has already withdrawn from Gaza and promised to withdraw from the other areas it captured by winning the 1967 war. Israel withdrew from Gaza and wanted to see how that worked out before withdrawing from the other areas. Let's see....

I don't know about 'Israel wanting other people's land'.

Israel is small enough right now. It's borders were far larger in ancient times.

Israel does have the right to get the Ten Commandments though.

Thank god for honorable statesmen like Carter. The world continues to lack peacemakers.

Good Christians know Christ wanted endless war even if we have to make up excuses to go to war.

Bald faced lie. Israel has been illegally occupying Palestine since 1967.

Really? When 'Palestine' was part of Jordan and Egypt, were they 'occupying' Palestine, too?

I think he's referring to the Carter who pissed off the Air Force be canceling the B-1 bomber and the Navy by canceling an aircraft carrier and some nuke subs. Part of Reagan's platform was a return to the arms race. Defense spending languished under Carter.
