Mark P. Begich (born March 31, 1962) is the junior United States Senator-elect from Alaska and the current mayor of Anchorage. A member of the Democratic Party, he served on the Anchorage Assembly for ten years before being elected mayor in 2003.
Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican in Senate history, narrowly lost his re-election bid Tuesday, marking the downfall of a Washington political power and Alaska icon who couldn’t survive a conviction on federal corruption charges. His defeat by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich moves Senate Democrats within two seats of a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.
As Zak Johnson from the blue steel democrats-blog writes:
But Begich’s win is also a huge win for gun owners. Begich joins the growing ranks of Democratic congressmen and senators (not to mention state and local officials) with strong pro-2nd Amendment records. Among Begich’s other credentials are his “A” rating from the NRA.
