Here Lies The Difference
It is unbelievable at times how much people doesn’t change over the years and not in a good way.
I’ve read a post of Nicole Belle that included a quot of McCain from 1973 about Watergate:
“However, I feel that, in the context of history, Watergate will be a very minor item as compared with the other achievements of this Administration, particularly in the area of foreign affairs. I do hope that this country will get over Watergate and get going again on the very serious problems that we’re facing today.” Clearly, McCain had misjudged the impact that would come from Watergate and how it would define, for at least the remainder of the twentieth century, Nixon’s presidency.
I don’t believe that the misjudgement was a mistake or a result of not understanding the political map, I believe that is is routed in something much deeper. The same as with the Bush administration the problem is that values are set aside to “get results”.
If in the thought patterns of people like McCain and Bush the results are what matters then the breach of protocol, bending the rules and other occurrences of behavior that symbolizes the Bush administration so much make sense.
In order to evaluate correctly the importance of the purity of the administration and to adhere to standards it is essential to value the process and the rules of pair play which are a fundamental moral value.
Being a Democrat means not just having slightly different answers to the same questions but a totally different set of priorities. It is not just what you want to achieve it is also what you are willing to do to achieve it. If we remember the liberal values and why they matter then we’ll have a better understanding on the real difference between us and them.
